Plot summary
Judge Leland Hoffman and district attorney Dan Callahan are on a hunting trip when Callahan is summoned back to the city: Paula Thornwall, a socialite, has been found dead at her estate, and her estranged husband Walter is the prime suspect. Callahan takes the prosecution himself, counting on the case to advance his campaign for governor, though Hoffman, who has been offered the same nomination, is the judge assigned to hear it. Senator Alex S. Simon, staying at the Dome Hotel, wants the governorship himself and offers Callahan his unexpired Senate seat, which Callahan turns down. At trial, a neighbor, Emma Jenson, identifies Walter as the man she saw, and defense attorney Clem Marker cross-examines her about a land dispute with Walter.
