Plot summary

A corporate executive in San Marino, California, Walter Whitney is married to Vivian and shares a house with her and her daughter Mary Ann. He is secretly Jewish, and his father-in-law and boss, Nelson Longhurst, once made him change his surname from Wiesenthal. Years earlier Walter was engaged to Lorraine Porter, and Nelson made clear that continuing the relationship would cost Walter his job, so Walter wrote asking to put things on hold. Lorraine never answered. Seventeen-year-old Roger Porter comes to Walter's office and says Lorraine was his mother and Walter his father; Roger has the letter, which he got from his Aunt Clara after Lorraine died. Walter asks Vivian to take Roger in for the summer as a foster son.
