Plot summary
Les Anderson wants his driver's license, mostly to impress Mercedes Lane. In Elmdale, California, he fails the written portion, but the Department of Motor Vehicles compares his results with his twin sister Natalie's high marks and lets him through, and he also clears the road test. His real scores then surface and the license is revoked. Les keeps this from his parents; his mother discovers the truth, and his father keeps him home for two weeks. The date with Mercedes proceeds, so Les slips out with his grandfather's 1972 Cadillac Sedan de Ville. Mercedes brings a bottle along, and Les turns to his friend Dean.
