Robert Gist
Biography
Robert Gist was an American actor and film director who got his start in Chicago, where he grew up around the stockyards during the Great Depression and first took to acting at the Hull House settlement house. Work in Chicago radio led to stage roles in Chicago and on Broadway, including the long-running Harvey, and while appearing in that production he made his film debut in Miracle on 34th Street (1947). He was later seen on Broadway in Charles Laughton's staging of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial in 1954, and his screen credits included Operation Petticoat (1959). While shooting that film he told director Blake Edwards he wanted to direct, and Edwards hired him for episodes of Peter Gunn; he went on to direct television including Naked City, The Twilight Zone and Route 66, and staged Edna St. Vincent Millay's Conversation at Midnight in Los Angeles and on Broadway. He died in 1998.

In November 1961, Gist staged the world premiere of Edna St. Vincent Millay's Conversation at Midnight at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles. The production ran only on the theater's three off-nights.

In the 1960s Gist became a Hollywood acting coach and started an actors' workshop. In 1964 he had its members, called The Group, perform evenings of Carl Sandburg's poetry titled The People Yes.
