Plot summary
Quincy Drew and Jason O'Rourke work the towns of Missouri and Kansas in 1857. Jason was born free in New Jersey and is well educated; Quincy is white. They first met when Quincy sold him a horse stolen from the local sheriff, and met again in jail, where the two worked out a partnership. Quincy poses as a broke enslaver with one slave left to sell, Jason plays that slave, and the buyers of a town bid for him. Jason gets out, and the partners meet on the road to divide the money. The scheme runs into trouble when a slave trader buys Jason and means to carry him farther south.

- Burt Kennedy dropped out of directing Skin Game when the producer started telling him where to put the camera, and Paul Bogart replaced him. Kennedy said that when he quit he was testing Lou Gossett and Cleavon Little for the black lead.
- Screenwriter Peter Stone claimed that James Garner radically changed Skin Game's last third to give himself more screen time. The changes annoyed Stone, who used a pseudonym on the film.
- In March, director Paul Bogart fell ill with hepatitis, and Gordon Douglas took over directing Skin Game for a period of filming.
