Biography

Martin Donovan is an American actor who built a long working partnership with director Hal Hartley, appearing across many of his films, among them Trust (1990), Simple Men (1992), Amateur (1994), Flirt, and The Book of Life (1998), in which he played Jesus Christ. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Reseda, he attended American Theater Arts in Los Angeles before joining the off-off-Broadway Cucaracha Theater. Beyond his Hartley work, he played Detective Hap Eckhart in Christopher Nolan's Insomnia (2002) and the CIA handler Fay in Nolan's Tenet (2020). On television he appeared in 14 episodes of the Showtime series Weeds, earning a SAG Award nomination for ensemble performance in a comedy series. He also acted in Saved! (2004) and The Portrait of a Lady, taking a best supporting actor prize from the National Society of Film Critics for the latter, and made his writing and directing debut with Collaborator (2011).
