Plot summary
Kay Connell, a seventeen year old in Nightmute, Alaska, is found beaten to death, her body washed and left in a landfill. The local chief asks two Los Angeles homicide detectives, Will Dormer and Hap Eckhart, to assist. A young local detective, Ellie Burr, admires Dormer and is assigned to guide them. Randy Stetz, Kay's boyfriend, tells them she had a secret admirer whom she would not name. Kay's backpack turns up by the coast, and Dormer sets a trap with it. Alone with Dormer, Eckhart explains that Internal Affairs is pressuring him and that he has agreed to testify against his partner. Dormer, under the perpetual daylight, cannot sleep.
