Plot summary
Changez Khan, the son of a poet, grows up in Pakistan where the family has little money. A scholarship takes him to Princeton, then to Underwood Samson, a valuation firm in New York, and into a romance with Erica, an American photographer. He later teaches at Lahore University, where the abduction of a colleague, the American professor Anse Rainier, and a demand for money bring a reporter, Bobby Lincoln, to arrange a meeting with him at a café. Changez tells Lincoln that he admires how America lets people rise. Business sends him to Manila during the September 11 attacks; back in the United States, airport officers strip-search him, and federal agents seize him on a mistaken charge and question him.
