Plot summary

Isabel Archer has turned down several proposals, among them one from the wealthy Lord Warburton, and prizes her independence. Caspar Goodwood, an American suitor, has come to England after her. Her cousin Ralph Touchett admires her spirit and persuades his father, her uncle, to leave her money, so that after the uncle's death she has a fortune of her own. Madame Serena Merle, a woman Isabel comes to like, arranges a marriage between Isabel and Gilbert Osmond, a widower living in Florence with his daughter Pansy, raised in a convent and kept from leaving the house while her father is away. Isabel is enchanted, accepts, and pays no heed to Ralph's warning that Gilbert is a small man.
