Plot summary
Roman Melnyk is allowed to leave work early to meet his wife Olena and their pregnant daughter Nadiya, flying in from New York on flight AX 112. At the airport he learns the flight has been in an accident. That same night Jake Bonanos, an air traffic controller, works alone while a colleague takes a coffee break and the telephone lines are down for maintenance, and he watches both planes vanish from the radar. Investigators do not hold Jake responsible, but he blames himself, withdraws from his wife Christina and their son Samuel, and unravels. His employer's lawyer urges him to move to another state under a new name. Roman, offered a settlement by airline lawyers, refuses to sign and wants an apology. Tessa Gorbett, a journalist, asks to write a book about the collision.

- Vitaly Kaloyev, the real man whose recollections of the actual events the film is based on, criticized it for "distortions", saying that unlike the film's main character he never sought pity or an apology, only justice. He added that the real air traffic controller, Nielsen, showed no remorse and behaved with arrogance and contempt.
- The film draws on the 2002 Überlingen mid-air collision between a passenger airliner and a cargo jet, but the names, places, nationalities and incidents were all changed.
