Plot summary
Pete Garrison, a veteran agent of the Secret Service, guards First Lady Sarah Ballentine, and the two are having an affair. A fellow agent, Charlie Merriweather, is killed, and an informant tells Garrison the death is connected to a plan to assassinate the President, with help from someone inside the Service who knows the President's security detail. The Protective Intelligence Division takes over, led by David Breckinridge, Garrison's estranged former protégé, working with rookie agent Jill Marin. Breckinridge orders polygraph tests for every agent. The person inside the Service learns of Garrison's meeting with the informant and of the affair, and uses both against him.
