Plot summary
A CIA operation at an opera house in Kyiv ends with the Protagonist captured and tortured; the suicide pill he bites is a test of his loyalty, and he is the only one who passes. A secret organization called Tenet recruits him and explains that weapons and other objects have had their entropy inverted, so that they run backward in time. Working with a handler named Neil, he follows a shipment of these munitions to Mumbai and to Priya, an arms dealer who belongs to Tenet. She tells him that the technology belongs to Andrei Sator, a Russian oligarch who talks with people from the future. Sator keeps his wife Kat under his thumb with a forged painting, and she becomes the Protagonist's way in.
