Plot summary
Megan Paige investigates murders for the Rochester Police Department. A young girl, Carla Castillo, has been killed, and her body is found in Churchville, New York, where traces of white cat hair are also discovered. Megan argues that a serial killer is responsible, and her colleagues, among them her boyfriend, Captain Kenneth Shine, do not agree. The FBI profiles the man as a drifter who acts on impulse, while Megan thinks he is local and methodical. The victim's first name, her last name and the village where she was found all start with the same letter.

- The film comes from real killings: from 1970 to 1973 three girls in and around Rochester, New York were raped and strangled and their bodies dumped in neighboring villages. Each girl's first and last names started with the same letter, which also matched the initial of the village where she was found.
- Writer Tom Malloy developed the script with the help of a homicide investigator who had worked on the original case, and said he saw the film as a cross between A Beautiful Mind and Zodiac.
- Eliza Dushku was an immediate choice for the lead role of the police investigator. The filmmakers also deliberately chose certain actors who had earlier played the role of a killer in other films.
