Plot summary
After a summer at a CIA training camp, Cody Banks, a 15-year-old sophomore, applies for a junior field ops post at the agency. His handler, Ronica Miles, sends him to learn what a scientist, Dr. Albert Connors, is developing for an organization called ERIS, which Dr. Brinkman runs, with François Molay as his henchman. Because Brinkman knows the agency's agents, the CIA uses Banks, who is unknown, and places him at the William Donovan Institute, the prep school Connors' daughter Natalie attends. His assignment is to befriend Natalie and get near her father. Awkward with girls and busy with homework, Cody is trained by a team of experts and issued gadgets. At school he rescues Natalie from falling off a ladder while she hangs a banner, and she invites him to her sixteenth birthday party.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Frankie Muniz was paid $2 million for the film, the highest amount paid to a child actor at that point since Macaulay Culkin, and both Muniz and Angie Harmon did most of their own stunts.
- Muniz revealed in 2025 that Duff was not his first choice for her role and that he had wanted Kristin Kreuk; he and Duff's mother did not get along, which soured his friendship with Duff, and the two never spoke again after the film's release.
- Madonna was an executive producer and her then-production company Maverick Films acquired the script; Jason Alexander was originally attached to direct before being replaced by Vic Armstrong, who was ultimately replaced by Zwart.
- Frankie Muniz's character is asked twice in the film if he is "in special ed", and when the film reached home video MGM included an apologetic paragraph in response to criticism of those lines.
