Plot summary
Scott Lang leaves prison wanting a steady life for his daughter Cassie, but his record keeps regular work away, and his former wife Maggie will not let him see the girl. His old cellmate Luis brings him a burglary, and the safe Scott cracks holds only an odd suit that shrinks him to insect size when he tries it on. The suit belongs to Hank Pym, who wore it years ago as Ant-Man and hid it. Pym's former protégé Darren Cross is close to perfecting a shrinking suit of his own, and Pym wants Scott to take that suit.

- Marvel and Wright announced on 23 May 2014 that he was leaving over "differences in their vision of the film". Wright said he had wanted to make a Marvel movie but did not think they wanted to make an Edgar Wright movie, and that becoming a director-for-hire left him less emotionally invested. Most of his crew left too.
- Development began as early as the late 1980s, when Ant-Man co-creator Stan Lee pitched the idea to New World Pictures, then Marvel Comics' parent company. Walt Disney Pictures was developing Honey, I Shrunk the Kids on a similar concept, and although Ant-Man went into development, nothing came to fruition.
- To de-age Douglas, Lola VFX used a process similar to the one that made Steve Rogers skinny in The First Avenger, along with footage from his films of the late 1980s. Dax Griffin served as his body double for his "striking resemblance of Michael when he was about 40".
- McKay confirmed that Rudd helped him rewrite the script, calling him "great with dialogue": the two holed up in hotel rooms on the east and west coast and spent about six to eight weeks grinding out a giant rewrite.
- Jordi Mollà was announced in the cast but never appeared in the theatrical release. Reed explained that the original opening, filmed and then cut in editing, was a sequence like the start of a James Bond film, with an unseen Pym retrieving microfilm from Mollà's character Castillo, a Panama army general.
- Rebecca Baehler directed the macro photography. Carpenter said vibration became "a tremendous problem" when moving the camera, because "one inch off the ground is like fifteen feet in the air", so the filmmakers turned to Baehler for her background in commercial "tabletop" photography.
