Plot summary
For years, Heather Mason has moved with her father from one town to another, changing their names each time. She believes they are hiding because he killed a man in self-defense and because her adoptive mother died in a crash. On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, nightmares of Silent Hill trouble her, and her father vanishes. A private investigator, Douglas Cartland, questions Heather about who she really is. A classmate, Vincent, stays close as she tries to find her father. A message tells her to go to Silent Hill, the town from her nightmares. Heather travels there with Vincent, hoping to learn what her father has hidden from her and why dangerous forces have pursued them for so long.

- Sony announced in September 2009 that Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida were signed on to the Silent Hill sequel, with filming to start after Resident Evil: Afterlife; that same month Avary was sentenced to a year in jail for vehicular manslaughter and could not take part.
- Filming on Silent Hill: Revelation began in Cambridge, Ontario in March 2011, but production was delayed when a freak snowstorm hit the set on March 23, 2011.
- Director M. J. Bassett let fans post names of actresses they thought could play Heather on her blog, asking for someone who could realistically pass for eighteen and had film experience; Adelaide Clemens won the role even though no fan had suggested her.
- When M. J. Bassett asked fans for casting ideas for the role of Claudia, some suggested Donna Burke, who had voiced and motion-captured the character in Silent Hill 3; Bassett was disappointed, calling it not a very imaginative selection, and deleted the post.
- Video game artist Masahiro Ito, who worked on several Silent Hill games, was asked in 2009 to design the film's creatures and the look of the Otherworld dimension, but turned the job down because of other obligations.
- Jeff Danna and Akira Yamaoka scored the film, but much of Yamaoka's contribution was cues from the Silent Hill games remixed by Danna; Yamaoka wrote only three new pieces, including the theme "Silent Scream", sung by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.
