Plot summary
Maria Coughlin, seventeen, tells her parents she has left school and that she is expecting a baby by her boyfriend Anthony, whom she means to marry. Her father orders her out of the house, she slaps him and leaves, and he suffers a heart attack. Her mother Jean blames her for his death and throws her out, and Anthony breaks up with her, saying a child would spoil his hopes of a football scholarship. Matthew Slaughter, an intelligent but unstable electronics repairman, has just quit his job at a computer plant and gone home to a father who slaps him for losing work. That evening he finds Maria in an empty house and offers her a bed.
