Plot summary
In 1944, in the Hürtgen Forest on the Belgian border, Private David Manning is the sole survivor of his company after a battle in the woods. He asks for a discharge on the grounds of mental unfitness from combat stress. Instead, Captain Roy Pritchett promotes him to sergeant and hands him a platoon of inexperienced replacements. Manning puts Private Warren Sanderson on point during a patrol, and Sanderson is separated from the squad and mocked by his peers when he returns. First Lieutenant Terrence Lukas berates Manning, and the company advances toward Schmidt and a key bridge, only to be driven back by fire in an enemy minefield. Pritchett asks for volunteers to destroy the enemy guns.
