Plot summary
After a Second American Civil War, Americans do most of their reading on a network called The 9, and books are banned, apart from a handful of greatly simplified ones. Firemen no longer put out fires; they set them, and they burn books and buildings on orders. Guy Montag works as one of them in Cleveland under Captain Beatty, doing as he is told and believing he protects society. A banned novel, Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground, and Clarisse, an informant who tells him the country's real history, push him to question that.
