Plot summary
In early 19th century Russia, Onegin moves through St. Petersburg society as a restless man who often lacks empathy for those around him. He inherits his uncle's estate in the country and leaves the capital behind. His neighbor there is Lensky, a young landowner and poet engaged to Olga, the elder daughter of a widowed mother. Tatyana, Olga's younger sister, is passionate and inexperienced, and she is drawn to the newcomer. She writes a letter declaring her love and gives it to him. Onegin declines her, saying that her youth and lack of experience make her unsuitable, and that he can offer her only friendship.
