Plot summary
Ned has spent years in witness protection with the Gardners, a devout Christian family, while his mother, Fay Grim, serves a life sentence for alleged terrorist activity. At eighteen he leaves them with a bible, cash and a new identity, and visits Fay, who tells him to forget his father and sends him to her brother Simon for the money a publisher has set aside for her autobiography. Simon, a writer in New York, hands Ned the bank card and says that Henry is in Seattle. In Simon's hotel lobby, a young woman named Susan has been waiting for weeks to talk to him about her thesis on his poetry; when Ned heads for the airport, she follows and talks her way into the trip.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- When Hal Hartley crowdfunded the film on Kickstarter, he offered a $9,000 tier giving seven years of distribution rights in the US and other countries - billed as the first Kickstarter to offer film distribution rights - until Kickstarter told him selling rights counts as a forbidden investment and he removed it.
- Casting the role of Susan took months, with 60 to 70 women auditioning for the part, and Gemma Arterton was reportedly attached to it at one point, until Aubrey Plaza was announced in the role in March 2014.
- The film's title is Hal Hartley's pseudonym, the name he typically uses as composer on his films; Ned Rifle was originally a character he made up for college writing assignments, and he thought it a better title than Ned Fool or Ned Grim.
