Margaret Hamilton
Biography
Margaret Hamilton was an American actress whose roughly fifty-year career took in theater, film, radio and television. Born in Cleveland, she did children's theater and joined the Cleveland Play House, where she studied with Maria Ouspenskaya and played the First Witch in Macbeth and comedic roles in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. She made her Broadway debut in 1932 in Another Language and repeated the role in the 1933 film version. Working as a character actress, she often played villains and became best known as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (1939), a part the American Film Institute ranked as Hollywood's fourth-greatest villain. Later credits included 13 Ghosts (1960), The Night Strangler (1973), Broadway musicals such as Show Boat and Oklahoma!, the radio series Ethel and Albert, and television roles on The Addams Family and Lou Grant.
