Plot summary
When Dr. Plato Zorba dies, his large house passes to his impoverished nephew Cyrus, who moves in with his wife Hilda, their daughter Medea and their son Buck. Zorba's lawyer, Ben Rush, explains that the property comes with the ghosts the doctor gathered from around the world, and that the will forbids the family to sell it. A housekeeper named Elaine, who holds seances, lives in the house, along with a set of special goggles through which the spirits become visible. The family soon finds the place really is haunted, and a Ouija board delivers a warning that someone will die there.

- For 13 Ghosts, William Castle shot the ghost elements with a red filter and everything else with a blue filter, then superimposed them; audiences wore red-and-blue cellophane glasses, the red intensifying the ghosts and the blue removing them.
- Another gimmick gave the first 20 million ticket buyers a key, one of which would unlock a supposed "haunted house" William Castle had purchased in France; the ticket holder whose key opened it would win the house, though it is unknown if the prize was ever claimed.
