Plot summary
Under the Houston Astrodome, in a fallout shelter he keeps to himself, Brewster McCloud is building a pair of wings. He means to fly inside the stadium, and Louise, a woman in a trench coat with scars on her shoulder blades, helps him and warns him that sex would cost him the urge to fly. Above them, Houston suffers a run of stranglings, the victims found covered in bird droppings. Haskell Weeks, a man of influence in the city, arranges for Frank Shaft, a San Francisco detective, to look into the deaths. At the Astrodome, a tour guide named Suzanne Davis shows visitors around. Elsewhere a lecturer holds forth on the habits of birds, and grows steadily more bird-like himself.
