Frankie Darro
Biography
Frankie Darro was an American actor who began as a child performer in silent films and later worked as a stuntman. Born in Chicago into a family of circus acrobats, he was trained by his father to walk the tightrope and appeared in his first film at age six. He played leads and supporting parts in adventure, western, and comedy pictures, and in 1931 was featured in William A. Wellman's The Public Enemy (1931), which brought steady work at Warner Bros. He appeared in Three on a Match (1932) and The Mayor of Hell (1933), and Wellman cast him as the lead in Wild Boys of the Road (1933), after which he was usually cast as a tough guy. He voiced Lampwick in Disney's Pinocchio (1940) and made his final featured screen appearance in Operation Petticoat (1959), continuing in small television parts and voice work.

A change of course
When film and TV work grew scarce, Darro opened a tavern of his own on Santa Monica Boulevard. He called it "Try Later," the answer he usually got from Central Casting when he asked for work.
Own stunts
In 1950, Darro took on his final job for Monogram, working as a stuntman. He doubled for Leo Gorcey in the film Blues Busters.
A first
Darro's last leading role came in Fighting Fools in 1949, after which he took smaller parts and did stunt work for other actors.
