Charles Winninger
Biography
Charles Winninger was an American stage and film actor, usually seen in comedies and musicals. Born in Athens, Wisconsin, he started in vaudeville before becoming best known for playing Cap'n Andy Hawks in the original 1927 production of Show Boat, a role he played again in a 1932 revival and in the 1936 film adaptation. His pre-Code films included Night Nurse (1931), in which he played a kindly doctor. Later screen roles came in Three Smart Girls (1936), Nothing Sacred (1937), Destry Rides Again (1939), Ziegfeld Girl (1941), and State Fair (1945). He went back to Broadway just once, for a 1951 revival of Music in the Air. His only lead film role was in The Sun Shines Bright (1953), John Ford's remake of Judge Priest. On television in 1954 he appeared in I Love Lucy as Barney Kurtz. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960 for radio, and made his final film that year.
