Plot summary
The year is 1906, and Tom Richards has drifted into Plattsville, a small town where he is picked up for vagrancy. Vinnie McLeod, proprietor of the Shield and Banner, first speaks to him in the town square, where he sits with a book, and later offers him a job as a journalist that keeps him out of prison. He takes it and begins shaking the place up, closing the paper for three days to redesign and relaunch it as an attack on Dougherty, the corrupt mayor, who owns a rival newspaper. Pete Dougherty, the mayor's son, is in love with Jane, Mrs. McLeod's niece.
