Plot summary
Duke Bradley is a bookie and a friend of the Clayton family, whose horse farm is broke from Frank Clayton's gambling. Duke steps in when the bank moves to take the family's stud. Frank's daughter Carol telephones from an English estate with news: she means to marry Hartley Madison, a wealthy Wall Street man who once won fifty thousand dollars from Duke at the track. Frank then hands Duke the deed to the farm to settle his gambling debts. Carol wants to buy the place back from Duke herself, without Hartley's money. When Carol and Hartley reach Saratoga, Duke hopes to draw Hartley back to betting at the track, and Carol is set against it. Duke greets Fritzi, an old friend, with a kiss.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Saratoga (1937)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Jean Harlow collapsed on the set during a scene with Walter Pidgeon on May 29, 1937, and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she died of renal failure on June 7 at the age of 26.
- About 90 percent of Saratoga was finished when Harlow died, and MGM planned to shelve the footage and reshoot her scenes with Virginia Bruce or Jean Arthur, but fans demanded her last film be released. Mary Dees, Harlow's stand-in of two years, played the remaining scenes shot from behind or in obscuring costumes, while Paula Winslowe supplied the voice.
- Lionel Barrymore tripped over a cable on set, breaking his hip for the second time in two years and reportedly his kneecap; in 1951 he said the damage to his hip had put him in a wheelchair.
- Screenwriter Robert Hopkins originally intended the script as a vehicle for Jean Harlow, but the studio first tried to borrow Carole Lombard from Paramount Pictures for the lead and was blocked by contractual difficulties. Reports that Joan Crawford would star gave way to Harlow being cast by 1937.
