Edward Brophy
Biography
Edward Brophy was an American actor and comedian who also did behind-the-scenes work in filmmaking during the 1920s. Born in New York City, he attended the University of Virginia. His first screen part came in Yes or No? (1920). While working as an MGM production manager, he was with Buster Keaton on location for The Cameraman (1928); when another performer failed to show, Keaton recruited him for the scene. That brief bathhouse bit brought him more roles. Keaton later cast him as a drill sergeant in Doughboys (1930), setting a Brooklyn-accented, streetwise screen type. He often played comic foils, dumb cops and gangsters, with credits including The Champ (1931), The Thin Man (1934), Freaks (1932), and Dumbo (1941), where he voiced Timothy Q. Mouse. In the 1940s he was the Falcon's sidekick in Tom Conway's film series. He appeared in John Ford films, notably The Last Hurrah (1958), his final movie.

Brophy was so known for a Runyonesque character and Brooklynese speech that by 1940 he was cast to voice Timothy Q. Mouse in Dumbo, though he went uncredited for the role.
