Plot summary
Jean Christy reports for a newspaper whose young owner, Pat Buckley, means to shut it down after quarreling with his editor-in-chief. She thinks Bob Lansford, the man Buckley dismissed from that post, could change his mind. Bob now runs a public relations firm and is courting the account of John P. Dillingwell, a rich tycoon whom many people dislike; while still an editor, Bob had engineered a smear campaign against him so that he would feel the need for a press agent. Bob finds out that Dillingwell's granddaughter Lorri is engaged to Buckley, and he sets about charming her, while Jean turns her attention to Buckley.

- With the success of The Adventures of Robin Hood, Errol Flynn worried about being typecast as a swashbuckler and convinced Warner Bros. to cast him in screwball comedies; the film's box-office failure encouraged the studio to keep him in action roles.
- Edmund Goulding turned down directing the film before it was finally assigned to Michael Curtiz. Principal photography went 12 days over the allotted time because of the switch in directors, yet Curtiz still brought it in $12,000 under budget.
- Warner Bros. borrowed Rosalind Russell from MGM for the film, replacing Bette Davis, who wished to take six weeks of holiday before starting on Comet Over Broadway.
