Plot summary
When Prohibition ends, Remy Marco turns from bootlegging to legitimate brewing. The beer his brewery makes tastes terrible, and nobody who works for him is willing to say so. After four years the business is failing and the bank is preparing to foreclose. Marco takes his daughter Mary, home from school, to his summer house in Saratoga, and brings along an orphan from his old neighborhood. Four dead men who had planned to ambush him are found at the house.
