Plot summary
Martha Proctor is certain that evil has entered her house. Her nephew, Dr. Dan Proctor, arrives with the woman he means to marry, Evelyn Heath, a frail invalid, and introduces her to Aunt Martha, to Dan's older brother Douglas, an illustrator, to Douglas's wife Ann, and to Miriam, Douglas's model. The women, knowing of the hard life Evelyn has had, sympathize with her. Evelyn suffers bouts of hysteria, among them a terror of birds, and a private diary holds her mockery of Aunt Martha's spinsterhood, her scorn for Dan, and her wish for Douglas. She plots to seduce Douglas and accuses Dan of jealousy so that he will leave, and she also works to drive Miriam from the house, the rival she sees.
