Biography

Frank Morgan was an American character actor who started in the theater before becoming a contract player at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Born in New York City in 1890, he died in 1949. He made his acting debut in Mr. Wu in 1914 and his screen debut in The Suspect (1916). After joining MGM, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Leading Actor for The Affairs of Cellini (1934). He was best known for playing several roles, including Professor Marvel and the Wizard, in The Wizard of Oz (1939). His films also included The Great Ziegfeld (1936), The Shop Around the Corner (1940), The Mortal Storm (1940), The Human Comedy (1943), and The Stratton Story (1949). He earned a second Academy Award nomination, for Best Supporting Actor, for Tortilla Flat (1942). On radio, he starred in The Frank Morgan Show and The Fabulous Dr. Tweedy.
