Douglass Dumbrille
Biography
Douglass Dumbrille was a Canadian character actor who appeared in Hollywood films. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he worked as a bank clerk while pursuing acting, then left banking for the theater and joined a stock company that took him to Chicago. He appeared in a film in 1913 and made his Broadway debut in 1924. With the Great Depression he returned to the screen, specializing in secondary roles and often cast as corrupt businessmen, crooked lawyers and sheriffs. Cecil B. DeMille, Frank Capra and Hal Roach sought him out. His movies included Broadway Bill (1934), Riding High (1950), The Buccaneer (1958) and The Ten Commandments (1956), in which he played the priest Jannes. He was a comic menace too, facing the Marx Brothers and working with The Bowery Boys, Abbott and Costello, and he had roles in more than 200 pictures. In the 1950s and 1960s he made television appearances, including two as a judge on Perry Mason.
