Walter Connolly
Biography
Walter Connolly was an American film and stage actor who made nearly 50 films between 1914 and 1939. He trained at the College of Music of Cincinnati and at St. Xavier College, then spent years on stage, including twenty-two Broadway productions from 1916 to 1935. Two silent films and a 1930 talkie came before his Hollywood breakthrough in 1932, with four releases that year. He often played exasperated businessmen and newspapermen, frequently the father of the leading woman, in comedies such as It Happened One Night (1934), Broadway Bill (1934) and Libeled Lady (1936). Other roles included The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932), The Good Earth (1937) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1939). His role as Nero Wolfe came in The League of Frightened Men (1937), and he played the title role in The Great Victor Herbert (1939), his final film. From 1932 to 1938 he starred in the NBC Radio series The Adventures of Charlie Chan.

A change of course
After serving with the U.S. Marines in World War I, Connolly went to Ireland and enrolled at the University of Dublin, reportedly intending to give up acting, but visits to the Abbey Theater rekindled his ambition.

On NBC Radio, Connolly took the lead role in The Adventures of Charlie Chan, a radio show that ran from 1932 to 1938.
