Biography

Hattie McDaniel was an American actress, singer and comedian who learned her craft in minstrel and carnival shows, then toured with George Morrison's Melody Hounds and recorded blues sides in the 1920s, becoming the first black woman to sing on American radio. Born in Wichita, Kansas, she moved to Los Angeles in 1931 and made her screen debut in The Golden West (1932), leading her to bigger parts such as Judge Priest (1934), directed by John Ford. Her performance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939) brought her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, the first won by an African American. She later appeared in Alice Adams (1935), Show Boat (1936), In This Our Life (1942), Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943), Since You Went Away (1944) and Song of the South (1946), and headlined the comedy series Beulah on radio and television. McDaniel died in 1952.
