Plot summary
Jim Henry, a Marine sergeant just discharged from the Korean War, travels to Las Vegas to look up Paul, an old buddy from the service. At a casino he falls in with Terry Smith, a former fashion model, and the two end up in an altercation. The next morning, while hitching a ride, Jim is picked up by Las Vegas police. Lt. Joe White Eagle shows him Terry's body; she has been strangled. Jim says Paul can confirm where he was, but Paul cannot be reached, so Jim seizes a revolver, holds the officers off and escapes in a patrol car. He abandons it and comes upon two women with a car that will not start, photographer Mrs. H. G. Cummings and her model, Susan Willis. He fixes the car, and they offer him a ride.

- Roger Corman said he based the story on a trip to the Salton Sea, where he saw abandoned houses with their first floors flooded. He started from the climax, a desert chase ending in a shoot-out inside a flooded house, and worked back to create the plot.
- The film's success encouraged Roger Corman to devote his career to cinema, and he used the money from the sale of his story to help finance his first film as producer, Monster from the Ocean Floor.
- Roger Corman quit his job and joined the production of Highway Dragnet as an unpaid worker, ending up with credits as its screenwriter and associate producer.
- Highway Dragnet was Roger Corman's first feature film credit; he also worked on the picture as an associate producer.
