Plot summary
J. J. Hobart, an aging stage producer and hypochondriac who is convinced he is about to die, is preparing a new show when his partners Morty Wethered and Tom Hugo admit they lost the show's money in the stock market. Chorus girl Genevieve Larkin suggests insuring Hobart for a million dollars so the partners can put on the show. Genevieve's friend Norma Perry, an ex-chorus girl, is sweet on Rosmer Peck, the insurance salesman who writes the policy. Rosmer's boss, Andy Callahan, doubts that Hobart will pass the physical, and when Hobart does, Rosmer finds he has a stake in keeping the producer alive.

- Busby Berkeley was dissatisfied with the songs Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg wrote for Gold Diggers of 1937, so he brought in Harry Warren and Al Dubin, whose "With Plenty of Money and You" became a hit.
- Warner Bros. paid $100,000 for the film rights to Sweet Mystery of Life, written by Richard Mauraum and rewritten by George Haight, just before the play opened; the play was a flop.
