Plot summary
Scott Henderson, a 32-year-old engineer in Manhattan, quarrels with his wife on their anniversary and goes to Anselmo's Bar, where he meets an equally unhappy woman who will not tell him a thing about herself. She comes with him to a stage show, and its star, Estela Monteiro, is furious to spot a stranger in the audience wearing the same unusual hat as her own. Henderson goes home to find Inspector Burgess and two other policemen there, and they tell him his wife has been killed, strangled with a necktie of his. The bartender, the taxi driver and Monteiro all say the woman was never there, and Henderson cannot describe her well enough to help his own case. Carol Richman, his secretary, who loves him in secret, begins her search for the missing woman at Anselmo's Bar.
