Plot summary
Michael Brandon, a wealthy American businessman staying on the French Riviera, wants to buy a pair of pajamas but only the tops. When the store refuses to split the set, Nicole De Loiselle, daughter of the penniless Marquis De Loiselle, offers to take the bottoms. Michael recognizes the marquis' matching pajama bottoms at his hotel and realizes Nicole is his daughter, so he buys a bathtub from the marquis for 60,000 francs. He proposes; she refuses, then accepts after an apology and a dinner invitation. At their engagement party she learns that he has been married seven times, each former wife receiving a yearly settlement. Nicole calls the wedding off and demands twice his usual prenuptial sum.
