Plot summary
Architect Steve Ireland and his wife Susan look forward to their fourth wedding anniversary and to their eccentric plans for the evening, a Baffin Island Inuit ritual done backwards this year. Susan's mother, Mrs. Cooper, arrives with a sprained foot and sends Steve out to mail her insurance premium. In the building he runs into Isobel Kimble Grayson, an old girlfriend who has just moved in one floor below. The elevator sticks, and Steve, half-strangled and struck on the head while climbing out, is woozy; Isobel takes him into her apartment and pours him strong drinks. Isobel is married too, but she makes plain that she would like things between them to resume. Steve is devoted to Susan. He says nothing about the meeting, and then Isobel's shoes turn up in his jacket pockets.
