Plot summary
Thomas Dekker is a diamond cutter in the early twentieth century who believes he has a rightful share of a rubber empire. He travels to Brazil to find out what happened to his father and to assert that claim. In the jungle he meets Teresa, a local woman who offers to be his guide. While they travel together, three armed men stop them and take them to a bandit named José Lobato. Lobato knew Thomas's father, and after he accepts that Thomas is the son of his old friend, he begins to tell the younger man a long story about Thomas's father.
