Plot summary
Charlie Chan, a detective, is sailing for Samoa as a passenger on an ocean liner. A fellow traveler, Scott Pearson, an agent of the United States Treasury, asks for his help and keeps the matter between the two of them. Pearson is hunting currency and art treasures that were plundered from banks in the Philippines during the Japanese invasion, and he tells Chan that two attempts have already been made on his life. Captain Black commands the ship. Rona Simmonds, an English visitor, is fond of George Brace, the purser. Tao Erickson is on the crossing with his wife, Laura.

- Sidney Toler was seriously ill with cancer while making Dangerous Money; at 72 he could hardly walk but insisted on finishing the picture. Monogram brought back Victor Sen Yung, his original "Number Two Son", to ease the burden and take over some of the action.
- Mantan Moreland, the series' usual chauffeur Birmingham Brown, is missing from Dangerous Money because he and Ben Carter were on an eight-week coast-to-coast personal-appearance tour. Comedian Willie Best replaced him as Birmingham's cousin, Chattanooga Brown.
