Plot summary

In 1897, Ross Hadley, Mike McGlennon and Mary Rogers are children hauled before a judge over a stolen wallet. The other two go back to their parents, while Hadley is sent to a reform school. By 1911 he has left the casino owner Chappie Wilson and opened a gaming establishment of his own, backed by Fay Lawrence, a wealthy bookie's widow. Wilson counters by hiring the singer Vi Parker, the Garter Girl, the stage name of Mary, now grown. McGlennon, now a police lieutenant and Hadley's childhood friend, means to shut the gambling down. Both men are drawn to Vi Parker, which complicates the friendship, and Fay Lawrence is unhappy about the arrangement at the club.
