Lyle Talbot
Biography
Lyle Talbot was an American actor whose work ranged across theater, film and television, beginning in traveling tent shows and Midwest theaters before Warner Bros. signed him in the early sound era. He worked in more than 175 productions, starting as a youthful leading man before moving into B movie leads and character parts. His films included Three on a Match (1932), 20,000 Years in Sing Sing (1932), Ladies They Talk About (1933) and Go West Young Man (1936). He helped found the Screen Actors Guild and served on its first board of directors. Talbot appeared in Glen or Glenda (1953), Jail Bait (1954) and Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957), gave the first live-action screen portrayals of Commissioner Gordon, in Batman and Robin (1949), and Luthor, in Atom Man vs. Superman (1950), and played neighbor Joe Randolph on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet from 1955 to 1966. He kept acting on television into the 1980s.

A first
Lyle Talbot holds the distinction of being the first live-action actor to bring two prominent DC Comics characters to the screen. He appeared as Commissioner Gordon in Batman and Robin and as the supervillain Lex Luthor in Atom Man vs. Superman.
Big break
Talbot's screen test at Warner Bros. went well, even though he acted in a scene from a play that satirized Darryl F. Zanuck, the studio's production chief. It also impressed director William Wellman, who wanted him for Love Is a Racket.
A change of course
Talbot said he never turned down a job, a policy that led him to appear in Ed Wood films including Plan 9 from Outer Space, often called the worst film ever made.

Talbot finished high school and then, at age 17, left home. He worked as a hypnotist's assistant and a part-time magician, and acted for audiences in theaters and traveling tent shows across the American Midwest.
Behind the camera
In 1962, Talbot took the stage as director and co-star of Marriage Go Round, acting alongside Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. The play was taken on the road again by Talbot and the Nelsons in the early 1970s.
