Morgan Conway
Biography
Morgan Conway was an American actor who came to the screen by way of the New York stage. Born in 1903, he spent eleven years in commercial real estate in New York City before closing his brokerage in 1933, and stage work soon followed, along with a move to Hollywood and a first film role in Looking for Trouble, a 1934 picture starring Spencer Tracy. He returned to Broadway for plays such as Angel Island and If a Body, then freelanced for years in bit parts and supporting roles, most familiarly in Charlie Chan in Reno. As an RKO contract player in the mid 1940s he was cast as Chester Gould's detective Dick Tracy, a calm, businesslike turn that the press received well. He played the role in Dick Tracy (1945) and Dick Tracy vs. Cueball (1946), and after RKO dropped him he left Hollywood in 1949, saying he had grown tired of being identified with the character.

First role
Morgan Conway got his start as an actor on the New York stage, then went west to Hollywood, where he acted in little theater and won his first film part in the 1934 picture Looking for Trouble, starring Spencer Tracy.
Big break
By the mid-1940s, Conway had a contract with RKO Radio Pictures. The studio picked him to portray Dick Tracy, Chester Gould's comic-strip detective, in a new run of feature films, and posed him in profile in early publicity photos to mimic Gould's square-jawed caricatures.
A role that slipped away
In 1948, Chester Gould wanted RKO to keep the series going and asked that Morgan Conway play the lead, but RKO, in turmoil after its sale to Howard Hughes, said no.
A change of course
Conway chose to quit making movies for good. He believed he had been typecast as Dick Tracy, and he said people stopped thinking of him as Morgan Conway and remembered him as Dick Tracy in the movies.
Behind the camera
Morgan Conway said in March 1948 that he wanted to start his own production company and turn out one film a year. He had two scripts ready, "Condemned" and "The Twins," and spent the next year seeking financing, but nothing came of it.
