Plot summary
Billy the Kid fought on the side of the homesteaders of Lincoln County, New Mexico, against the large ranchers, and he was a murderer. Sheriff Pat Garrett shoots him. Roy Rogers, a deputy sheriff who looks much like Billy, reaches Lincoln County, and the people there take him for the outlaw. Because word of the killing has not spread, Garrett lets Roy pose as Billy and carry on the homesteaders' fight, though without the killing. Frog Millhouse, a traveling salesman of musical instruments, helps him.
