Plot summary
Alex Winkley, a Navy sailor, regains consciousness near a New York newsstand with a hazy memory of the night before and money in his pocket that he cannot explain, and only seven hours remain before he leaves for duty. The blind piano player Sleepy Parsons calls on his ex-wife Edna Bartelli to collect fourteen hundred dollars she owes him, and her purse turns up missing; she blames a sailor. At a nightclub Alex dances with June Goffe, a dance hall girl, and she takes him to her apartment. When Alex learns that June's mother lives in Norfolk, Virginia, close to the naval base where he is stationed, he gives her part of the money and says he took it after repairing Edna's radio. June tells him to take it back.

- RKO's B-picture head Sid Rogell bullied director Harold Clurman during production meetings, according to director Richard Fleischer, who said Rogell threatened to "kick the director right in the balls". Fleischer said Clurman accepted it without complaint.
- A significant portion of Deadline at Dawn is alleged to have been directed by William Cameron Menzies, who refused to take credit because he disliked Harold Clurman and did not want his name linked with Clurman's in any way.
