Plot summary

A stagecoach carrying six dancehall girls brings Rev. William Macklin II into Lodestone. Among the women is Laura, who once loved saloon owner Marty Callahan but no longer does. Macklin's father built a church in the town before it burned to the ground, and Macklin has come to rebuild it and minister to the people. Callahan opposes the plan and persuades the townsfolk to give the preacher no help. Cash matters more to Lodestone than religion, and Macklin's first service draws only the saloon girls. He also campaigns against gambling at the Silver Palace Saloon. Callahan offers to finance a new church if Macklin builds on the other side of town, but Macklin refuses to move.
