Plot summary
In Florida, boxing promoter Nick Donati is double-crossed when his own fighter accepts a bribe of $25,000 from the gangster Turkey Morgan and throws a bout. Nick and his girlfriend Fluff spend what they have left on a days-long party. There Nick orders Ward Guisenberry, a young farmer working as a bellhop, to mix drinks, and Fluff shows him how. When the drunken champion Chuck McGraw shoves Fluff, Ward punches him to the floor. Nick is impressed and persuades Ward to try boxing. Ward then wins his first bout by knockout against McGraw's brother. Nick sends Fluff and Silver Jackson, who works at ringside, with Ward by train to New York, where Morgan waits at their hotel. Ward knocks him down and says he will sign only with Nick.
